The Modern JavaScript Tutorial at javascript.info is the resource we'd pick if we could only keep one. It starts from absolute basics but never simplifies to the point of being wrong, and each chapter ends with small exercises that have worked solutions. It is also unusually current: it teaches the language as it's written today rather than as it was in 2012. Work through Part 1 in order, then treat Parts 2 and 3 as a reference for the browser and advanced topics.
